Nuclear industry representatives highlight essential role of nuclear
Paris, 29 September 2023: Under the umbrella of the inaugural Government-Industry “Roadmaps to New Nuclear” conference organized by the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) and the Government of France, representatives of the nuclear industry in OECD nations have issued an Industry Communiqué highlighting the essential role of nuclear in meeting climate and energy security goals.
“We very much welcome this initiative of the OECD NEA and the Government of France in bringing together governments and industry”, states Yves Desbazeille, Director General of nucleareurope. “We need to act now if we want to overcome the challenges we are facing in terms of climate change and energy security. And this means supporting ALL clean energy technologies, including nuclear.”
According to the statement – co-signed by nucleareurope together with its international partners – the nuclear industry remains committed to working together with governments on, for example, extending the lifetime operation of the existing fleet and driving significant reductions in new project construction costs and timelines. At the same time, we call upon policymakers to, amongst others, foster a financial framework that encourages investment in nuclear energy, and to develop technology-neutral climate policies.
