nucleareurope speaks at Baltic Nuclear Energy Forum
On 18 March 2024, nucleareurope Nuclear Technology Advisor Guilherme Cardoso was invited to provide some concluding remarks at the end of Day 1 at the Baltic Nuclear Energy Forum held in Gdańsk (Poland).
During his intervention he highlighted Poland’s unique potential for nuclear energy development. With a robust industrial infrastructure and growing energy demand, Poland is poised to leverage nuclear energy to meet its needs while advancing decarbonization goals. He noted the emphasis placed by speakers on nuclear energy’s role in achieving energy security, sovereignty and independence, thus positioning it as a cornerstone of Poland’s energy strategy alongside renewables.
The discussions highlighted the urgency of implementing a nuclear strategy amidst geopolitical shifts, the need for regional government support and the economic opportunities nuclear presents for job creation and infrastructure development. Speakers underscored the need for mature and deliverable nuclear technologies, the importance of maximizing local content, and the significance of collaborating with the education sector to ensure a skilled workforce for the nuclear industry.
He also noted that the focus on nuclear technologies for society and industry showcased the potential of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) in terms of decarbonizing heating, Canada’s investments in new nuclear technologies and strategies for efficient and risk-mitigated nuclear power construction, with an emphasis placed on safety and public engagement.
