nucleareurope presents Pathways to 2050 report at AIPE 10 year anniversary
On 23 October 2024, nucleareurope Director General Yves Desbazeille presented the recently released “Pathways to 2050” report, in the framework of a panel discussion on the topic of the future of nuclear in Europe, held as part of the Italian Pressure Equipment Association (AIPE) 10 year anniversary conference.
In his intervention, Yves gave an overview of the “Pathways to 2050” report conclusions, highlighting the benefits of additional nuclear capacity for decarbonisation, energy affordability, security of supply and industrial competitiveness.
“Aiming for 150GW of installed nuclear capacity by 2050 would for example allow to save around 430 million tonnes of CO2 emissions, save €310 billion in total power system costs, reduce gas consumption by about 180 billion cubic metres, and generate domestic clean hydrogen in the EU, saving around €83 billion and reducing dependence on hydrogen imports by up to 33%” said Yves, insisting on the need for policy-makers, industry, consumers, civil society, regulators and trade unions to implement enabling measures which would support the development of European nuclear capacity.
