nucleareurope presents overview of nuclear energy in Europe at Connect-NM kick-off meeting
On 2 October 2024, nucleareurope Technology Advisor Guilherme Cardoso gave a keynote presentation at the CONNECT-NM kick-off meeting, on the topic of nuclear energy in Europe.
The presentation detailed nuclear energy’s significant role in the European economy, with the nuclear industry sustaining over 1 Million jobs across Europe, and generating €100 billion per year in European GDP.
Guilherme highlighted the role of nuclear energy in achieving the EU’s decarbonisation targets, with nuclear currently providing almost half of the EU’s low-carbon electricity. He added that nuclear provides a stable, clean energy source capable of supporting the EU’s climate goals for 2050 and beyond.
Insisting on the importance of innovation, Guilherme emphasized the need for continued investment in research and development, and for collaboration between industry, research institutions, and policymakers.
“Thanks to nuclear research and innovation, material resilience has been strengthened and innovative fuels have been introduced, thus improving reactors’ efficiency and allowing for long-term operation of existing reactors” said Guilherme, adding that future developments and advanced reactor designs would play a key role in meeting the EU’s energy needs while supporting its decarbonisation efforts.
