nucleareurope participates in first of a kind Greek event on nuclear

On 21 October 2024, nucleareurope Legal & International Relations Director Berta Picamal participated in a panel discussion on international perspectives and insights from nuclear embarking countries, in the framework of an event organised by the Greek nuclear start-up Athlos Energy, which aimed at exploring the potential for a new nuclear power programme in Greece.

In her intervention, Berta lauded Athlos energy for the organisation of Greece’s first ever workshop on nuclear prospects. She highlighted that the Greek situation was a reflection of a broader evolution at European level, with many European countries recently announcing plans to invest in or continue using nuclear energy, and a general increase in favourable public opinion of nuclear.

“At the EU level, it is essential that policy makers adopt a technologically neutral approach to the energy transition to provide the right framework for the development of all net-zero technologies, including nuclear” said Berta, listing recent positive developments such as the inclusion of nuclear in the sustainable finance taxonomy or the creation of the European Industrial Alliance on SMRs. She however noted that the imposition of technology specific targets for electricity generation or the exclusion of nuclear from some EU funds may hinder the development of European nuclear capacity.

Berta concluded her presentation by highlighting the benefits that nuclear could bring to the Greek State and to the EU, by supporting a secure, affordable and clean energy supply for future generations.
