nucleareurope discusses nuclear’s role in reaching net-zero at EEA event
On Wednesday 16 October 2024, nucleareurope Policy Director Andrei Goicea participated in a panel discussion on the expectations and reality of EU climate policy, organised by the European Enterprise Alliance (EEA), in collaboration with the Warsaw Enterprise Institute (WEI) and the Union of Entrepreneurs and Employers (ZPP).
In his intervention, Andrei noted that nuclear responds to all three challenges of the current energy trilemma: greenhouse gas emissions reduction, affordability and security of energy supply.
Responding to a question on the effectiveness of the current EU policies on climate change, Andrei called for policy makers to adopt a technology neutral approach to the energy transition: “the focus should remain on the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions to reach net-zero by 2050, not on technology specific targets.”
Andrei concluded his remarks by insisting on the importance of equal treatment of all net-zero technologies, noting that nuclear was still not eligible for many EU funds, such as the innovation fund.
