nucleareurope discusses European SMR Alliance at CEPI Energy Efficiency Solutions Forum
On 9 April 2025, nucleareurope Policy Director Andrei Goicea participated in the Brussels-held European Energy Efficiency Solutions Forum Day, organised by the Confederation of European Paper Industries (CEPI). The event gathered energy producers, technology developers, policymakers and industrial energy consumers to discuss solutions towards a decarbonised energy system which responds to the needs of end users.
In his intervention, Andrei gave an overview of the European Industrial Alliance on Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), highlighting some of the key characteristics of SMRs, and their potential to address some of the challenges faced by energy intensive industries. He added that SMRs present significant advantages in terms of energy system integration, as well as electricity and heat generation for industrial consumers.
“The European Industrial Alliance on SMRs aims to facilitate and accelerate the development, demonstration and deployment of SMRs in Europe. It is composed of over 300 members, representing manufacturers, researchers and policy makers, but also end users such as energy intensive industries” stressed Andrei, adding that the Alliance covers 28 SMR designs, and 5 different SMR technologies.
Andrei concluded his intervention by detailing the topics covered by the Alliance’s 8 Technical Working Groups (TWGs), noting that the first TWG specifically focuses on industrial applications of SMRs.
