nucleareurope participates in WNTI Semi Annual Members Meeting
On 5 December 2024, nucleareurope Legal and International Relations Director Berta Picamal participated in the World Nuclear Transport Institute (WNTI) Semi Annual Members Meeting, taking place in London.
In her intervention, Berta gave an overview of the current European policy landscape and detailed recent developments for nuclear – such as the inclusion of nuclear in the Sustainable Finance Taxonomy and in the Net-Zero Industry Act – as well as upcoming policy files announced by the new EU Commission, citing the Clean Industrial Deal and the updated Nuclear Illustrative Programme (PINC).
“Despite positive policy developments for nuclear and a rising proportion of Member States in favour of nuclear energy, the lack of technology neutrality in policy making remains a key concern, and nuclear is still not treated on an equal footing with renewables” said Berta, “the exclusion of nuclear from some EU funds and the absence of its fuel cycle in the Sustainable Finance Taxonomy hinder the development of a European nuclear supply chain and jeopardise European energy security.”
Berta concluded her intervention by stressing that a long-term policy vision is essential to derisk investments in nuclear and in the nuclear fuel cycle, noting that coordinated European policies on transport are also key for nuclear development.
